About Us
The Birchwood Four Corners Emergency Services District (BFCESD) provides fire protection and rescue services to the residents in the Village of Birchwood, Townships of Long Lake, and Birchwood in Washburn County, the Townships of Cedar Lake and Doyle in Barron County, the Township of Wilson in Rusk County, and the Township of Edgewater in Sawyer County.
Position Overview
Volunteer firefighters are responsible for responding to emergency incidents, participating in department training, maintaining equipment and apparatus, and assisting with community events and fire prevention activities. Members must be willing to work in physically demanding and potentially hazardous environments while following department safety procedures and operational guidelines.

Key Responsibilities
Volunteer firefighters are responsible for responding to emergency incidents, participating in department training, maintaining equipment and apparatus, and assisting with community events and fire prevention activities. Members must be willing to work in physically demanding and potentially hazardous environments while following department safety procedures and operational guidelines. Anticipated occupational exposure risks include the following: Bloodborne Pathogens, Chemical, Airborne Communicable Disease, Extreme Temperatures, Radiation, Uneven Surfaces or Elevations, Extreme Noise Levels, Dust/Particulate Matter.
Minimum Requirements
- Complete Wisconsin Entry-Level Firefighter training and Entry-Level Driver/Operator within one year of hire, or as availability permits.
- Successfully complete a one-year probationary period.
- Attend required department trainings and meetings.
- Maintain a commitment to teamwork, safety, professionalism, and community service.
- Valid Wisconsin Class D drivers license.
- Must live within Fire District territory.

Salary and Benefits
Fire calls, trainings and meetings receive fire department pay of $20 /hour. Additional tasks may be served on a volunteer basis. Eligibility for WI VFIS program (Wisconsin Department of Administration Service Award Program) after one year of service: It functions as a pension-like incentive rather than a standard employment 401(k).
Pre-employment Screening
Candidates selected for employment may be required to successfully complete a job-related pre-employment evaluation through the district's designated occupational health provider. The evaluation may include a medical assessment, functional physical abilities assessment, and drug screening, as applicable to the position and district policy.

The Birchwood Four Corners Emergency Services District (BFCESD) provides professional 911 emergency medical services to the Village of Birchwood (Washburn County), Birchwood Township (Washburn County), Edgewater Township (Sawyer County), Wilson Township (Rusk County), and Cedar Lake Township (Barron County), and surrounding communities as needed. Our team is committed to delivering high-quality, compassionate care.
Position Overview
The Birchwood Four Corners Emergency Services District is seeking motivated and dependable Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians (AEMTs) to join our EMS team.
Birchwood EMS provides 24/7 emergency medical response and ambulance transportation to communities across portions of four counties in northwestern Wisconsin. Our paid-on-call department operates in a rural environment where teamwork, clinical judgment, and the ability to adapt to challenging circumstances are essential. Birchwood EMS does not currently provide inter-facility transport services.
Our EMS personnel respond to a wide variety of medical emergencies, traumatic injuries, motor vehicle accidents, and other incidents requiring emergency medical care.
We are looking for individuals who take pride in patient care, demonstrate professionalism, and are committed to serving their community. Hired individuals are subject to completion of a 1 year probationary period.
Reports to: Samantha Zemaitis, EMS Director
Key Responsibilities
- Respond to emergency medical calls and provide patient assessment, treatment, and transportation within the individual's scope of practice.
- Operate as part of a two-person ambulance crew, with additional personnel available when staffing permits.
- Safely lift, move, and transport patients using appropriate equipment and techniques.
- Operate and maintain ambulances, medical equipment, and emergency response supplies.
- Complete accurate and timely electronic patient care reports.
- Participate in continuing education, department training, and quality improvement activities.
- Maintain effective communication with patients, families, dispatch, medical control, and other emergency responders.
- Follow department policies, medical protocols, and established safety procedures.
Qualifications
Required:
- Current Wisconsin EMT or AEMT license, or eligibility for Wisconsin licensure.
- Current AHA CPR certification.
- Valid driver's license and ability to meet the district's ambulance driving requirements.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Willingness to participate in required training and maintain applicable credentials.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and demonstrate sound judgment under pressure.
- NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800 and Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD).
Preferred:
- Currently licensed as a Nationally Registered EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic
- At least 1 year of previous experience working for an EMS service.
Salary and Benefits
- Eligibility for WI VFIS program (Wisconsin Department of Administration Service Award Program) after one year of service: It functions as a pension-like incentive rather than a standard employment 401(k).
- Paid training and professional development opportunities.
- Hourly wage dependent on licensure. Probationary wages beginning at $16.00/hour.
- Our paid-on-call model offers eligible personnel the flexibility to respond from home during scheduled shifts. Personnel living beyond an eight-minute response of the station are required to remain on-site during their shifts, with scheduling generally limited to 36 hours per week.
- Not included: expansive benefits package such as Medical, Dental, Vision, Short-term Disability, Life, Accident and Critical Illness and Hospital Indemnity. No HSA or FSA. No vacation time, PTO options, or sick time. Optional to purchase: Aflac supplemental benefits, all costs to employee.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
Birchwood EMS personnel must be capable of performing physically demanding tasks in unpredictable environments, frequently with limited staffing and resources.
Our ambulances are generally staffed by two individuals, and personnel may be required to perform patient care and movement without immediate access to additional lifting assistance.
Essential functions include:
- Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling medical equipment in excess of 50 lbs.
- Assisting with the lifting and movement of patients of varying sizes, including transferring patients between beds, stretchers, chairs, and ambulance cots.
- Participating in patient extrication using backboards, soft stretchers, and other patient-moving devices, including situations where additional personnel or mechanical lifting resources are not immediately available.
- Performing CPR, including sustained chest compressions, kneeling, bending, and working in confined spaces.
- Working on uneven terrain, navigating stairs, and entering or exiting ambulances while carrying equipment.
- Performing patient assessment and treatment while standing, kneeling, crouching, reaching, or working in awkward positions.
- Maintaining the ability to hear and respond to patient communication, radio traffic, equipment alarms, and other important auditory information, with or without appropriate accommodation.
- Working in adverse weather, low-light conditions, confined spaces, and other potentially hazardous emergency environments.
- Completes an accurate patient care record including demographic information, clinical findings, history, medications, allergies, treatment rendered, and any changes during transport. Documents and relays accurately the patient's medications, dosage, and frequency to assure medical reconciliation whenever conditions permit.
